Biodiversity

Our screening method documents the results when a property's outdoor areas and operations are redesigned with a greater focus on biodiversity.

Denmark has less and less space for nature and biodiversity, but the many outdoor areas around properties can help make a difference.

Therefore, DEAS has established its own biodiversity index to measure the impact of efforts that promote biodiversity. The index makes the results tangible and measurable when investing in the redesign and operation of a property's outdoor areas with greater consideration for plant and animal life.

The index measures biodiversity

The index records, for example, types of nature and plant species in outdoor areas, including their condition, quality, and value. Based on these measurements, outdoor areas are assigned a specific score that documents improvements, also over time.

With the tangible measurements in the index, one can assess the quality of green areas before and after changes are implemented and clearly show how investment in biodiversity has made a real difference.

There are several ways to consciously work with biodiversity to create added value in relation to various parameters.

"We have the opportunity to create outdoor areas on residential and commercial properties that help increase biodiversity, while also improving the user experience and strengthening social sustainability."

Helle Hangaard, Senior Director, Sustainability – Certification and Outdoor.

Operations make a big difference

When efforts are made to improve biodiversity in an outdoor area, our team annually or semi-annually records how plant life and insects have developed. Operations play a crucial role in this regard.

When we create biodiversity projects, we focus on developing detailed operational plans for each property that support the planned goals and activities. Operational staff are also introduced to how to maintain outdoor areas so they develop in the right direction.

Expert team in biodiversity

DEAS has a special responsibility because the outdoor areas surrounding the many residential and commercial properties we manage provide a great opportunity to make a significant difference in terms of biodiversity.

As part of our Sustainability department, led by landscape architect Helle Hangaard, a dedicated team works to increase biodiversity and create better frameworks for communities in the properties' outdoor areas. The team advises on, for example, landscape projects, improving the diversity of flora and fauna, climate adaptation, and infrastructure that can enhance the overall biodiversity footprint.

The team has developed the screening method for the biodiversity index, which assigns a specific, tangible number to the biodiversity of individual properties and outdoor areas.
